Aurora 2001

Aurora 2001: fire in the sky

Based on the natural phenomena of the aurora borealis and australis, a series of interactive virtual scenarios (cyberscenaries) were created. These were written in VRML and were projected on a screen on the background of the stage. It was used what was a novelty at the time, a wireless mouse, controlled by a radio signal and with a range of about 30 meters. Besides herself, Maida Withers chose Joseph Mills, one of the dancers, for the solos. Mills wrapped the device with crepe tape on his wrist; both alternated the dynamics of virtual scenarios with the movement of their bodies. Mills said at the time: "I had never used a mouse on the stage and I realized that a very simple movement could create something very large in the image. It was my body with complete freedom of creation".

The auroras, borealis and australis, Earth magnetosphere, solar flares (explosions of ejected plasma of the sun), Norse mythology and its connection with nature, besides the legends and superstitions due to the phenomenon in Arctic and Antarctic countries were the sources of the journey’s inspiration. The result was a beautiful spectacle of unforgettable images from cyberscenaries, along with the touching music of the Norwegian composer Oystein Sevag, director of the Global House Band.

The spectacle was seen in 2001 in Washington (USA), in Trompso (Norway) and in Brazil, Brasilia, (a presentation of one of the soils), with crowded house. In 2003 the Maida Withers Dance Construction Company re apresented the show in St. Petersburg and Arcangelo (Russia).
